Five, everywhere

Many ancient cultures, East and West, described the world in fives. The lists differ, the instinct is the same. This drop follows the Eastern Five Phases, where the five are not substances but stages of change, each one turning into the next.

Written in the sky

Long before telescopes, sky-watchers in the East tracked five wandering stars and gave each one an element. Jupiter is the Wood star, Mars the Fire star, Saturn the Earth star, Venus the Metal star and Mercury the Water star. Jupiter takes about twelve years to circle the sun, so it was used to count the years.

The 60 count

The calendar runs on two wheels: ten heavenly stems and twelve earthly branches. Turn them together, one step a day, and the pairs repeat every 60, the lowest common multiple of 10 and 12. Days have moved through this count for centuries. The stem of the day you were born is your Day Master, the element tradition says is you.

10 stems×12 branches→a cycle of 60

The cycle

Each element feeds the next and checks another. Wood feeds Fire, Fire leaves Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal gathers Water, Water feeds Wood. Mycelium lives the same loop: it breaks the old down and grows the new.

  • Feeds Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood
  • Checks Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood
